THREAT OF BUSH FIRE.
DANGER AVERTED. Per Press Association. WHANGAREI, Jan. 23. A serious fire threat to the Puketi State forest, adjoining Mangamuka, occurred yesterday, when an outbreak of scrub and gorse, fanned by a high wind, swept towards the edge of the bush. Five hundred acres of gorse and scrub were burnt.
Parties led by a forest officer, Mr J. Ogle, and a Forest Department surveyor, Mr Sexton, obtained control and prevented serious damage from being done.
