RISK OF APPLICANTS. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHI KCli, Jan. p. More hoys than can Ire accepted at pres'ent are applying for apprenticeships in the railway workshops of the Dominion, the Minister oi Railways (lion. 1). 0. Sullivan) said to-day. “When the shops resumed work alter the holidays.” the Minister said, "100 lads were taken on as probationer apprentices at the Otahuhu, Woburn, Addington and Hillside workshops. There was a fairly large waiting list, and the hoys engaged were selected in order of priority of application and on their educational Tpialifications.” Air Sullivan said he regretted that openings could not lie found at the shops for more hoys who had just left school. The majority of the applicants desired to lie titters or turners —a preference which showed a natural bent for mechanical engineering.
The new apprentices who proved to he competent and otherwise suitable at the termination of their six months' probation would he indentured for five years, except in the ease of plumbers who underwent six years’ apprenticeship.
