ASHHURST-POHANGINA.

HANOVER WINS HURDLES. FINE DISPLAY OF JUMPING. (By “Spectator.”) In the opening event of the Ash-hurst-Pohangina Racing Club’s meeting, the Hack Hurdles Handicap, Hanover had his first victory of the season, and it was an easy win. Bing Boy and Parry were scratched. Hanover, jumping brilliantly, fenced too well for the deposition, and after being under a strong pull over the first round, finished on full of running to win by two lengths. Tareha was challenging the leader all the way but could not c-ope with Hannv’r's ''mining. Tareha hit the second fence in the straight heavily the first time round and was under the whip approaching the last fence, where Hanover started to draw away. Princess Isabel, always handy third, finished on in the straight to catch Tareha in the run home to gain second place by a nose. Alaahunui was fourth. FLAMAIARION’S SPRINT. PACEAIAKER GOES UNDER. Gay Chou, installed a strong favourite for the open sprint, had the run of the race on the fence from Alyth, and Flammarion. The latter moved up very fust round the home turn as Screen Star faded, and led Gay Chou into the straight to finish with a brilliant run three-quarters of a length in front of the pacemaker.

Alyth ran a very good race to lie a close third. Sporting Gift, who drew the rails, but was sent to the outside because of his behaviour at the barrier, appeared to he hopelessly left when the tapes rose, but made up his ground and finished with a brilliant burst of speed in the straight to be right up behind Screen Star. At one stage it looked momentarily as if he might come through on the rails and win.

RED WITCH SCORES, ROWANA UNLUCKY.

Red Witch, who has improved a great deal since winning at Hawke's Bay, ran a very sound race to get homo half a length from the rather unlucky Itowana in the Komako Hack Handicap. Jeanne, Red Witch and Copycat were the early leaders by three lengths from Thrasos and Guiding Light. Red Witch dropped back a bit half a mile from home and was then joined by Thrasos, with Rowana handy. Copycat and Jeanne had led into the straight, but both faded out as first Thrasos and then Red Witch, followed bv Rowana, came through. Red Witch did best to score narrowly from Rowana, Copycat taking third place. Thrasos finished fourth, wide out. This big horse was unable to negotiate the bends as easily as the others. He was followed home by Guiding Light, Jeanne and Stella Lux.

LUCULLUS LAD’S CUP. RETURN TO FORM. Lucullus Lad. showing a long overdue return to form, won the Ashhurst Cup, but lie was assisted by the fact that, in behind the naeenviker Aureus, he was allowed to make liis own rules for practically the whole of the journey. Galteemore finished very fast on the rails for second place, and AYinsome Lu also put in a strong finish to head off the favourite, New Cuttle, for third place. Six furlongs from home, Aureus. Lucullus Lad, Master Cyklon .and Amatory was the order, Tiger Gain and Royal Choice moving up fast. Lucullus Lad was in charge from Royal Choice and Aureus three furlongs from home, where Galteemore had moved up into sixth place. Master Cyklon having steadily gone hack from a favourable position on the rails. Nothing had a chance of heading the winner in the run home. Aureus, having her first start over a distance, performed very creditably from out in front to finish fourth, followed by Amatory. Helen Ford. A faster Cyklon. Tiger Gain and Royal Choice who, apparently, was talien up a bit too early in the running. RACING IN DETAIL. I HACK HURDLES HANDICAP, of £150; ( second horse £3O and third £2O.
