LOSS OF BARQUE.
RESULT OF INQUIRY
Received January 21. 8.5 a.m. HAMBURG, Jan. 20.
The inquiry into the disappearance of the Admiral Karpfanger found that the ship is a total loss and the cause cannot be explained.
The German training barque AdmTra* Karpfanger, of 2754 tons gross, formerly was the Erikson barque J,’Avenir, and was bought in 1937 by tJio 1 famburg-Amonka Line, one of the two major German shipping companies, and renamed after a famous German sailor. She left Port Gcrmein, South Australia, on February 8, and, with her auxiliary engine, she should have reached Hamburg in May under normal circumstances. She was last reported from Capo Horn on March 1 and has not since been hoard of. Her master was Captain Walker. , , . The Admiral Karpfanger was bought from Captain Gustav Erickson for £17,700. having been purchased four years previously from Belgium for £5500. 'Hie Ham-inirg-Amerika Line completely overhauled the vessel and fitted her with excellent accommodation for cadets. 1 lie barque was built 30 rears ago by Rickmors, of Breinerhaven, ‘to be used by Belgium as a seagoing training ship.
