ISSUE OF IMPORT LICENSES
NEW BASIS SUGGESTED
Per Press Association. GREYMOUTH, Jan. 20. The necessity for approaching the Government in a conciliatory spirit in an endeavour to remove anomalies arising out of the import regulations, was stressed at a meeting of Greymouth importers called to-day by the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce. It was pointed out that the Government had been compelled to take action to conserve the London funds, but that the position was not fully understood, particularly regarding ipporters of seasonal goods, who were unable to import in the first half of tho year if they had not done so last year. Tt was decided to send delegates to the Wellington conference with instructions to endeavour to have licenses based on importations for two years or alternatively for a whole year instead of six months. The delegates also were instructed to endeavour to secure adequate consideration for the smaller ports, it being pointed out that in the past when a now' tariff had been imposed, importers outside tho main centres had been placed at a disadvantage.
