EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” DECEMBER 24, 1908.
A petition was being presented to Parliament asking that a telephone exchange be established at Otaki. It was also desired that direct telephone communication between Parlmerston North and Levin be made available.
A boat race on the Manawatu River, between Palmerston North and _ Foxton, had taken place. The Ripple, manned by eight men, had covered the 88-mile journey in hours. Lindrum, a juvenile billiards player, had scored a break of 317, of which 315 were off the red. This constituted a world’s record for a hazard break on a standard table. It was considered that the lad had a brilliant future.
The Railway Department had run a special train to Greatford for the races at Bulls and arranged for coaches to take passengers to the course.
Bookmakers had a particularly busy time at the Manawatu races.
