EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,” DECEMBER 23, 1908. Oil account of the growing importance of Palmerston North the Post and Telegraph Department decided to extend telegraph facilities enabling telegrams to be despatched any time between 8 a.m. and midnight. This was a big improvement on the old 9 a.m. to 5 p.ni. service. The Fire Brigade was in the habit of ringing the fire boll at any time in the evening with a view to training the members in a quick turn-out. Business people, however, complained that the practice caused uneasiness and it was stopped. . , The Ashhurst Post Office -was being enlarged and the telegraph messenger and letter carrier provided with uniforms in keening wi+h tbc'r new status. Queensland postal authorities were praising the fact that a letter addressed. “Mrs Smith, The Bush. Oueensland,” baa been correctly delivered.
