THIRTY YEARS AGO.
EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” NOVEMBER 28, 1908. Pu-Yi, a two-year-old son of Prince Chun, was crowned Emperor of China. The coronation was attended with much ceremony. There was a roll number of 454 at the College Street School. The Education Board had been asked to appoint a third assistant. To encourage closer settlement the Government placed 46,000 acres on the market. Owing to a long spell of dry weather there was a shortage of water in the borough of Palmerston North, and restrictions were in force. Austria was increasing her army by 60,0000 and pursuing a vigorous armament policy. In its final year the Manawatu Railway Co. paid a dividend of 7 per cent. In 1907-8 it carried 610.250 passengers and 33,920 tons of merchandise.
