LAWN TENNIS.
AMERICAN NATIONAL DOUBLES. SEMI-FINALS REACHED. Received August 27, 10.30 a.m. BOSTON, Aug. 26. Tbe American national doubles tennis championships were continued to-day. After persuasion by tbe American Lawn Tenuis Association Hopman announced that he and Schwartz would play an exhibition match against Quist and Bromwich, instead of defaulting. Results: — MEN’S DOUBLES. (Holders, von Cramm and Henkel.) Semi-finals. ,A. R. Quist and J. Bromwich (Australia) beat H. Hopman and J. Schwartz (Australia), 7—5, 4—6, 6 Budge : and Mako (United States) beat Allison and van Ryn (United States), 6—l, 6—2, 3—6, 10 8. The Australians put on their exhibition game, which delighted the crowd of 1800. AH played crisply and everybody was satisfied that it was an immeasurably superior solution of an awkward situation to defaulting. The first three sets of the match bet Wee Budge and Mako and Allison and van Ryn produced routine tennis, but the final Set was a classic, the veterans attempting a comeback. They seemed over-nervous and treated the champions with, the greatest respect. They played defensively and declined to go to the net together. / These tactics suited Budge and Mako perfectly. The position was aggravated by vail Eyn’s inaccurate long-court game. Voileying quietly and precisely, the champions seemed set for an easy win. However, they let up in the third set, which Allison and van Ryn won from 3—3. Down o—4 in the fourth set, Allison sprang into dynamic activity. Volleying and driving with strength and superb accuracy, he completely overshadowed Budge, repeatedly winning from halls down the sidelines or between his opponents. In a hectic 20 minutes Allison, took, the score from 5—5 to B—B, and then saved three match points. It was a most brilliant individual exhibition. Van Ryn throughout was a broken reed; otherwise the veterans might have won. WOMEN’S DOUBLES'. Semi-final. 'Madame Mathieu (France) and Mdlle. Jedrzejowska (Poland) beat Misses Wynne and Coyne (Australia), 6—4, 6-4-2. The elimination of Misses Wynne and Coyne in 30 minutes was rather inglorious. The pairs did not function as teams. It was just player versus player, with tactics thrown overboard. The stroking of Madame Mathieu and Mdlle Jedrzejowska proved superior.
