Per Press Association. 1 HAWERA, Aug. 26. 1 Representations to the Government 1 to be stricter in its measures for the c apprehension and punishment of con- t verters of motor vehicles will be made 1 according to a decision reached at the a North Island Motor Union Conference. £ It was reported that 786 cases of cars . being converted had occurred in 1937. ' Of these 718 cases had been debited to members, who considered increased I penalties were necessary to meet the p situation. v
The provision of facilities for the purchase O.f petrol after ordinary hours received the attention of the conference, it being decided to seek assurance from reselling bodies that motorists’ interests would be safeguarded.
The Petrol Resellers’ Association advised that the hours service station employees should work had not yet been fixed. It was suggested that where local schemes could be worked out there should be applied no drastic curtailment of the houi-s contemplated. It was stated by a delegate that, with the opening of emergency stations after the closing of petrol stations at 8 p.m. pending, the union should watch this development to insure a Dominion-wide application.
