EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.’ AUGUST 26, 1908.
A deputation headed by Mr R. B. Ross, M.P. for Pahiatua, had waited on the Minister of Roads urging that the Government should compel the Kairanga County Council to fulfil its obligations in regard to keeping the Gorge Road open. Mr W. Duncan (Wanganui) and Mr E. Short (Feilding) had set a new record for 3 hours 23 minutes for the motor journey between - Palmerston North and Wellington. A newi wing of the All Saints’ Children’s Home had been officially opened by Her Excellency Lady Plu'nket. Mr J. M. Johnston had been reelected president of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce and Mr H. Haydon vice-president. On the suggestion of the president, a resolution had passed : “That steps be taken to stop the spread of Socialism in New Zealand ”
In a Rugby match for the Ranfurly Shield, Auckland (holders) had defeated Taranaki by 9 points to nil. The Japanese Government had decided. as “a gesture to the world,’’ to curtail its expenditure on armaments by £20,000,000.
