WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

TE KAWATJ GROUP MEETING. The epidemic of measles and other general sickness which is so prevalent in the district did not affect the attendance at the August meeting of the Te Kawau Group of Women’s Institutes at Rangiotu, there being some eighty members present. Mrs Russell, of Rangiotu, was in the chair, and associated with her was Mrs Churchill, of Rongotea (convener). Mrs Russell welcomed both members and visitors. Institutes responding to the rollcall were Carnarvon, Glen Oroua, Oroua Downs. Kopaue, Rangiotu and Rongotea, while there were ten visitors present. Mrs Barltrop. who judged the open floral competition, gave a very interesting talk dealing with the presentation boxes in the competition, pointing out the pleasing effects, and also instanced how the various entries could be improved by just the necessary extra little artistic touch. every article being a sample of excellent knitting. Tile Judge, Mrs Matthews (Marton), , finally made the awards as follow:—Senior: Mrs Paine (Glen Oroua) I, Miss Glare (Carnarvon) 2; juniore: Miss Dulcie Christensen (Oroua Downs) 1. Miss M. Will (Rongotea) 2. The chocolate sponge competition also had a large number of entries and the judge, Mrs Buchanan (Tiakitahuna), said that although every entry was exceedingly good, the winning two (in the senior group) were outstanding, first and second prizes going to Mrs Baker, of Rangiotu. The junior section was won by Miss M. Vallendar, with Miss J. Yallendar second. Miss Francis (Oroua Downs) gained first place in the floral competition, with Mrs Attwood, of Bainesse, second. The three judges, in commenting , on the competitions, mentioned that they had not seen better entries even at large shows, and the number of entries certainly exceeded the number usually entered.

A short programme was enjoyed, those contributing being little Mi6s Dulcie Boyce, of Glen Oroua Miss Francis, of Oroua Downs, Mrs Wilkinson, Rangiotu. and Rangiotu members in a one-act play. An invitation from Glen Oroua was accepted for the March group meeting, the competitions for this meeting to be : Cooking, nut and date loaf; knitting, a knitted tea cosy. Both these competitions to have a senior and a junior class,: and also an open floral competition for a table vase of flowers. It is also hoped to have Mrs Somerset, of the Adult Education School, Feilding, as the speaker. Rangiotu members acted as hostesses for afternoon tea and also as stewards for the various competitions. Mrs Russell presented the various trophies.
