RUGBY FOOTBALL

MANAWATU UNION. MORE ABOUT SHIELD CHALLENGES. The management committee of the Manawatu'Rugby Union met last evening. Those present were Messrs A. M. Ongley (chairman), K. W. Eglinton, H. R. Crawford, J. R. Hardie, W. Carruthers, W. Gleeson, H. Palmer and E. Clevely. Apologies for absence were «eceived from Messrs P. 0. Skoglund, R. L. Park, L. J. Plank and J. A. Colquhoun. The New Zealand University Rugby Football Council invited members of the union to attend the North v. South Varsity match on Saturday. The writers also advised that Mr C. Taylor had been selected as the referee. —Received.

The Wanganui Union accepted September 3 as the date for a junior representative match as a curtain-raiser to the return match between the Wanganui and Manawatu representative teams, at Palmerston North.— Received.

Schoolmasters at Feilding who are Rugby coaches forwarded a request for passes.—The passes are to be forwarded. The New Zealand Union, replying to a request for a ruling as to Manawatu’s challenge for the Ranfurjy Shield, reiterated that the ruling w-as the successful challengers would take challenges that were accepted by the previous holders and the matches would be played on dates to be mutually agreed on.—The chairman said the question was whether the priority of challenges was retained. The New Zealand Union either was not capable or did not wish to give a ruling on the subject. He offered to discuss the subject at the next meeting he attended, and this offer was accepted. There was a general discussion on the position of season ticket holders at next Saturday’s match. It was pointed out that there was a junior grade final (Kia Toa v. Old Boys) to be played, and that there would be a number of holders of season tickets who would wish to see that match, quite apart from the Universities’ match. The latter fixture, however, was controlled by the University Rugby Council and therefore the union’s privileges did not apply. The meeting decided that all passes would be suspended for Saturday. It was decided to arrange for the use of a second ticket-box to facilitate the handling of the attendance at the gate. The Taranaki Union forwarded an itinerary of a forthcoming tour in which their team is to meet the Manawatu side on. Wednesday, September 14.—Received.

Mr Gleeson was appointed manager of the representative team to play at Wanganui on Saturday. Mr .Clevely was appointed manager of the team to meet Oroua at Feilding, also on Saturday. For the return match with Wanganui, at Palmerston North on September 3, Mr Gleeson will also be manager, while Mr Clevely will be the manager of the junior Manawatu team to play the Wanganui junior team on the same date at Palmerston North.
