MOTOR TRACTION.

REMARKABLE DEVELOPMENT. LONDON. Aug. 22. A power transmitter combining the functions of both the clutch and gearbox was described by Mr F. C. Lea, 0.8. E., Professor of Engineering, at the Science Congress in a paper dealing with the invention of Pietro Salerni," a London Italian, who declares he will not give the monopoly to any country. The principle is also applicable to steam turbines. The invention replaces the gearbox by a centrifugal pump, driven by an engine and pumping oil to a turbine containing reaction elements. The turbine conveys the power so developed to the driving shaft. Everything is regulated from the accelerator, the only other gadget being the reverse lever.

Scientists tested a car which Mr Lea stated had undergone tests over 65,000 miles. It does 21 miles to the gallon and starts readily with a full load on a lin 4 grade. It shows surprising acceleration.
