Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., was unable to presido at the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Palmerston North today owing to indisposition. Justices of the Peace took the sitting. Canon G. Y. Woodward, Rev. J. S. Holland, Mr C. H. Handley, and Mr E. Whitcombe will represent the All Saints’ Parish at the Wellington Diocesan Synod, which is to open on July 14. Mr Reginald Lett, Dip. Grad., Stott’s College (Melbourne), Dip.-Grad., N.E. Inst. (N.Z.), Dip-grad. B.M. School of Art (Sydney), Grad. P.T.P. School of Art. (N.Z.), has joined the staff of Messrs Collinson and Son, Ltd. Mr H.' D. McLeod, formerly of Dunedin, has commenced his duties at the Palmerston North Post Office as senior ■ supervisor of the postal branch in succession to Mr D. H. Dinnison, who was recently promoted to a similar position at Auckland.

Canon C .H. Ritchie, rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Edinburgh, and his son, Mr J. S. R. Ritchie, arrived at Auckland yesterday from Vancouver. A former resident of Dunedin, Canon Ritchie is revisiting the Dominion after an absence of 17 years. Mr C. E. Critchley, the Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, was a visitor to Palmerston North today. He was the speaker at the .Rotary Club’s weekly luncheon, reviewing his work and touching on his observations in the East Indies, where lie carried out the duties of Trade Commissioner for several years before coming to New Zealand. The death occurred yesterday morning at Oamaru of,Mr Michael Joseph Hannon, aged 55 years, president of the Oamaru Trotting Club for 17 years, states a Dunedin Press Association telegram. He was recognised throughout the Dominion for his great knowledge and ability in trotting affairs. He was the owner of several outstanding horses, including Albert Cling, who won £7OOO in stakes. “Rev. D. de Candole, who was ordained in Lincoln Minster on 'trinity Sunday by the Bishop of Lincoln and appointed curate at All Saints’ Church, will leave England on June 30, via Suva, and will arrive in New Zealand about August 17,” states the All Saints’ Parish Magazine. “We wish him a safe and happy voyage, and we know the parish will give him a hearty welcome on his arrival,” adds the magazine.

Mr H. It. French suddenly-collapsed and died during the singing of the first hymn in the Methodist ' Church, Hastings, last night. Mr French, who was born 'at Auckland about 70 years ago, was county clerk at Warlcworth for some years and edited a lochl newspaper there. He was a member of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce and of the Hastings Retailers’ Association. Last year lie was made vice-president of the Methodist Conference of New Zealand, the highest honour in the Methodist Church possible for a layman. Mr French is survived .by his wife, formerly Miss Bertha Shepherd, of Port Albert; two daughters, Adjutant French, of Dunedin and Mrs R. H. Craven, of Hastings; also three brothers. Mr Charles French, of Remuera, Mr William French, of California, and Mr Albert French ,of Rotorua, and two sisters, Mrs A. J. Stallworthy and Miss L. French, both of Auckland.
