SATURDAY’S MATCHES. ROVERS AND THISTLE WIN. Due to the heavy rain last week the grounds at North Street Park were very soft for Association football matches on Saturday. Results : Senior.—Rovers A 5 v. Y.M.C.A. 3: Thistle 6 v. Rovers B 1. No. 1 ground on which Rovers A beat Y.M.C.A. was in a particularly bad condition, the players experiencing difficulty in running. Indeed, so trying was it to play that soon after the commencement the interest shown by the players began to flag. The teams were: Rovers A.—Stubbs, Oman, Bennett, Laing, K. Anderson, Cameron, Morgan, Young, Brown, Williams, Donnelly. ' , , Y.M.C.A.. Davidson, Brougham, Howard, Gatley, Collis, Ward, Dingwall, Harkness, Allen, Searle, Warner.
Twenty minutes of uninteresting play preceded the scoring of the first goal. Brown intercepted the ball from Harkness and sent it to Cameron, the latter crossing to Anderson, who, with the leather at his toe, commenced to move down towards the Y.M.C.A. goal. Little opposition was put up, and he experienced no difficulty in scoring. Rovers’ next goal was shot by Brown from just outside, the penalty area. At half-time there was no change in the scores.
Soon after the recommencement, Brown, well supported by Young and Williams, penetrated the Y.M.C.A. defence, and after a short tussle around the goal shot to good effect. He repeated the performance a few minutes later. It was now .Y.M.C.A.’s turn. Dingwall came away with a brilliant rush down the wing, but failed to open their account.- He repeated his performance, however, with a suddenness which caught Rovers napping and ' resulted in a goal. Shooting the ball to Young, Brown started a movement which carried the Rovers’ attack into Y.M.C.A.’s half. Young sent the ball to Morgan, who passed it back to him. Williams was the next to receive it and, hard pressed by Harkness, he crossed to Brown, who shot, making no mistake. Time and again Dingwall was obliged to take the initiative or see his team hopelessly outplayed. Again he invaded Rovers’ territory to score a second goal. With only a short while left Y.M.C.A. attempted to stave off an overwhelming defeat, but it was not until within the last few minutes that they were again able to score. Finding an open goalmouth in front of him, Dingwall essayed a shot from a fair way out, Stubbs just failing to gather the ball in. Mr H. Lock was the referee.
THISTLE v. ROVERS B. The Thistle forward line was too fast for Rovers B, who sustained defeat in an inferior game. The Rovers front line was weak. Allen and Watson played reliable games, while the shot which placed Downes among the day’s scorers was a nice one taken from the wing. The teams were as follow, those who scored having the number they shot given in parentheses:— Thistle,—Kempson, G. Downes, F. Petersen, Moore, Curtis, Stewart, Hooker, Harvey (1), Allen (3), Watson (1), T- Downes (1). Rovers B.—Fairclough, B. Kendall, P. Kendall, G. Arlidge, Berryman, Rickard, Bartlett, Armstrong, Hart, Blummont (1), ’•'Pagan. Mr S. J. Bennett refereed.
