PREMIER'S EXPLANATION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 2G
“The director has to get the most interesting material and make some changes in speakers and performers when necessary. In the finish, the director has to be judge of materials and speakers, too,” said the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), referring. to'the recent action of the Director of Broadcasting (Professor J. Shelley) in informing station IZM Auckland that no further talks were to be given by Mr A. E. Robinson, secretary of the Auckland Provincial Bbancli of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, without specific approval from the National Broadcasting .Service. “We must not. make one man an institution on the air. That is all there is in it,” Mr Savage said. “We want the best in lectures over the air, as well as in music'•and we do not want the same people all the time. Tile director and those in charge of the service have to be the judges. It is not a question of restricting freedom of speech: at all. Representatives of farmers as well as of other sections of the community will always be welcome to send in scripts.”
