UTUWAI.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) UTUWAT, Juno 25. Air C. L. Hunter, M.P. for Manawatu, was recently the guest of Mr and Mrs J. Smith, of Utuwai, whore, in the evening, lie addressed a public meeting of some thirty or fortv of the. residents in the hall. Mr B. M. Flavall was elected to the chair and introduced Mr Hunter who said Ho wished to repudiate the accusations made against the Labour Party generally. Political propaganda was rife throughout the country, be said. But a careful survey of Labour’s achievements in the short space of two and'a half years would convince honest-minded persons of the unfair criticisms. The ccs.t of living was being, blazoned as one of the evils caused by Labour’s . influence j but the fact that' the average man was more nlile, by reason ol higher wages, to meet the situation,, was riot mentioned. Every, adult person in New Zealand must be aware of the Government's efforts in the right, direction. ,yet some only appreciated and others disaoprovod. 'Unemployment was considerably lessened and steps were being taken to further eliminate and finally overcome it. Education from alj angles was being carefully and methodically adjusted. Social services were being rendered for the betterment of all who needed them. One alter another of the Government’s policies wore touched cin and explained. After speaking for about two hours Mr Hunter concluded bv thanking all present for the patient and courteous hearing accorded him. •Manay questions were asked, to all ol which he gave ready and lucid answers. It was decided by the Labour supporters ■that a vole of confidence in the speaker and his party be given individually in person, and so the vote was not proposed in the usual way.
