SELASSIE’S PROPERTY.
/ • BRITISH SAFEGUARDING BILL. LONDON, June 23. Mr Arthur Henderson (Labour) has been granted leave to introduce the “Haile Selassie Property Bill,” the purpose of which is • to safeguard the title, of the Emperor to property within the jurisdiction of the British Courts.
It is explained that this will prevent Italy obtaining £IO,OOO from Cables and "Wireless, Ltd., in the event of Britain recognising the conquest of Abvssinia.
Mr Henderson added that the Bill is backed by members of all parties.
Judgment was reserved in an action by the former Emperor Haile Selassie in the Chancery Court in London in March in which lie demanded £10,613 from Cable and Wireless, Ltd., allegedly duo under an agreement which the company contends applies to whoever is tlie Sovereign in Ethiopia. A reply from the Foreign Office on the question which was read out stated that Britain recognised the Italian Government as the Government, de facto, of virtually the whole of Ethiopia.
