At the annual meeting of the Otago Harbour Board, Mr William Begg was re-elected chairman. The appointment of Messrs J. S. Jessep and H. nr. Christie, M.P., as members of the Board of Native Affairs has been gazetted. Mr M. A. Eliott, of Palmerston North, was elected treasurer at the annual meetifig yesterday in AVellington of the Royal Society of New Zealand.’-- •, ! ■. . . On the recommendation of the Hector Award Committee, the Royal Society of New Zealand, at the annual meeting in Wellington yesterday, unanimously made a posthumous award of the Hector Medal for Ethnology to the late Bishop of Waiapu (Rt. Rev. H. W. Williams). * The Hutton Medal for entomology was awarded by the Royal Society of New Zealand at its annual meeting, yesterday, to Dr David Miller, chief of the entomological department of the Cawthron Institute, Nelson. The award was made in recognition of Dy Miller’s work in agricultural entomology, particularly insect pests.
The members at the monthly meeting of the Palmerston North subcommittee of the Wellington Acclimatisation r Society, last night, stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Mr John Brassell, of Hutt, the represen tative' of the Pahiatua subcommittee on the society for about 18 years. The chairman (Mr E. GMatthews) said the deceased gentleman had been a very valued member of the society.
