WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.
LONGBURN GROUP RALLY, The largo tearoom at Collinson and Cunninghamo’s was effectively decorated'yesterday for the rally of the Longburn group of Women’s Institutes. Mrs Rowlands, of 'Tiakitahuna, presided, and'with her was associated Mrs E. Dymock, the convener. Mrs A. E. Mansford (Mayoress) was the guest of honour. Members were welcomed by the hostesses, Mesdames N, P. Nielsen and H. N. McEwen (Tiakitahuna). “Comrades and Friends” was sung, Mrs F. G. Murphy being at the piano. The Aokautere, Whakarongo, Kairanga, Tiakitahuna, Ashhurst aut( Longburn Institutes were represented; Mrs Rowlands welcomed Mrs Mansford - and congratulated her on being called to fill the position of Mayoress again.
In returning thanks, Mrs Mansford extended a welcome on behalf of the city. She said she preferred to look on the gathering as from the district which was so much a part of Palmerston No/th, and commented the. members Tor their ready eo-opera-tion in all projects that were for tho welfare of women. She expressed the hope that all would spend an enjoyable afternoon.
The federation president (Miss Grant) was congratulated on her re-turn-to office and shoulder Sprays were presented to her and to Mrs Mansford. Mr L. J. Wild, M.A., headmaster of the Feilding Agricultural High School, gave a talk on his travels in Canada following the lines of his previous addresses. • In conclusion Mr Wild referred to the scheme for further education iu Feilding which had been in operation for a week. An auspicious beginning had been made and the speaker expressed the hope, that members would take every advantage and make opportunities of meeting Mr Somerset, who was in charge.
A vote of thanks was accorded the
speaker on the motion of Mrs Rowland. Miss Freda Whittaker gave a musical monologue and a recitation, and Master Andrews vocal solos. 1 It'was decided to continue holding group meetings in Palmerston North. Mrs Dymock was nominated as group convener for a further term and Mrs D. ;Scott (Aokautere) was elected chairman for the next group rally. Competitions, which were judged by Mrs.D. Buchanan (Tiakitahuna), resulted as follow: —Shortbread : Mrs H. Turner (Kairanga) 1, Mrs J. Clark (Kairanga) 2, Mrs E. Kilgour' (Kairanga) 3. Bed socks: Mrs Kilgour (Kairanga) 1, Mrs Bleakly (Ashhurst) 2, Mrs Currie (Ashhurst) 3. t Mrs Rowlands thanked the performers, Mrs Brookfield, who made the shoulder sprays, Mrs Buchanan, for judging, Mesdames Murphy and J. Garde Grimshaw for playing the accompaniments, and all who had helped to make the afternoon a success. Mesdames Rowlands and Dymock were also, thanked for their share in the work.
