WOODVILLE & DISTRICT

JOCKEY CLUB’S PROG@,ESS. WOODVILLE; May 27. With the purchase of two acres of land, formerly the property of Mr T. H. Lowry, the Woodville Jockey Club has advanced another step to what is Eventually expected tq be the provision of "another outlet from the course. At the present time the whole of the race traffic has to use the one outlet to reach the main route to and from the township but, with the additional land, there is provided a frontage to Lowry Road, the property acquired being behind the caretaker’s house and beside that of Mr Fred Davis. Stables are situated on the two acres, having seven loose-boxes, feed rooms, boys’ quarters, etc., and the buildings are in good order. At the present time they are rented by Mr Davis. The stables brine into the ownership of the club traditions which will long live for this course, for it was here that Desert Gold was trained for Mr Lowry by Mr Davis. Previously Mr Lowry trained at Greenmeadows, but the excellence of the Woodville course for constant work by the horses prompted his decision to make the change, and Mr Davis took up his residence in Woodville as the outcome of that decision. The change was made during the War and the eventual ownership of the section by the club brings into vet closer association 'with the club itself the memories of Desert Gold and other widely known horses which have passed through these stables. BOROUGH IMPROVEMENTS. An inspection of Fountaine Square has been carried out by the reserves committee of the Woodville Borough Council, but no decision as to improvements can be arrived at until the next meeting of the Borough Council, falling early next month. The reserves committee was deputed to inspect the Square with' the object of reporting on its improvement, o,ii£ of the main items being the removal or not of the hedge which runs round it. Another matter which is to be discussed at the coming meeting of the Borough Council is street maintenance generally and a report is to be placed before the council in that regard also, in this instance from the works and finance committee.
