MOTHERS’ UNION.

ALL SAINTS’ BRANCH

The members of All Saints’ branch of, the Mothers’ Union held their monthly i.veeting yesterday, opening with a short service in the church, conducted by Rev. J. S. Holland. A discussion took place on the subject of contributing to a f»’it for the new cathedral in Wellington, also on holding a party in June. Mrs Waring-Taylor wrote acknowledging a letter of sympathy from the branch. The National Council of AY omen wrote asking the branch to reconsider affiliation with the council. The matter was left to the discretion of the committee. An apology for absence was received from the vicar (Canon G. Y r . AVoodward), and the members were reman* ed of the harvest festival.

Mr Holland then gave a talk on “The Relation of tlie Individual to th# Church.” He briefly traced the early history of the Christian Church, froW its identification with the Jewish nation—the new Israel—to the Reformation and the present day. The Church believed that everyone liad a duty to himself and a duty to those outside. The members of the Mothers’ Union bad duties to tlieir children and duties to-the Church. They must obey the laws of the Church not blindly but knowing they were reasonable and right. It was their duty not only to keep the body of the Church healthy, but to remember they were themselves members of the Church.

Mr Holland dealt with the positions of officers in the Church and the rights and duties of individuals and the congregation as a whole. The address, which was very instructive, was received with applause. Mrs J. Hunt sang two solos, accompanying herself at the piano. The tea hostesses were Mesdames E. Ashcroft. Dunstan, J. Ax, W. • Bingham and R. Carruthers.

A tournament to return representative hospitality was held in August, when representative teams from Wanganui, Horowhenua, Te Kawau, Bush, and, Feilding visited us. Both A grade and B grade representative teams took part in the games, and gained valuable experience thereby. At the end of the season it was decided to replace the dinner function held in previous years by an afternoon tea, at which the' trophies were presented to the winning teams by tlie Alayoress, Airs Alansford.

“The finance of the association is in a satisfactory condition despite the heavy expenses necessitated by the New Zealand tournament. Our thanks are due to the treasurer, Aliss J. At. Barrie, for the able way in which she conducted tlie novel “petrol competition” which proved such a financial success. A dance was again held, and, although most successful socially, tho financial gain was small. The social committee again worked hard, and to them, and also to the ladies’ committee, who are ever readv to assist us, the association tenders its grateful thanks. The association also tenders thanks to the High School Board of Governors, for the use of the Technical School grounds in Grey Street; the St. John Ambulance Association, for assistance rendered; Mr N. T. Nielsen, for auditing the accounts; the Press, for its courtesy in publishing fixtures and results; and to all referees who so willingly give their assistance each week.”
