SANDON

(From Our Own Correspondent.) SANDON, April 20. The grand opening of the Sandon Queen. Carnival, which was held in the Town Hall last evening, was an unqualified success. Before asking Mr A. K. Drew to present the queens, Mr J. Fagan (secretary of the Hail Committee) outlined the objects of the carnival, stating that at a public meeting twelve months ago, it had been resolved to hand over the management of the hall to a separate committee. It was decided by this new committee that, in order to carry out the required improvements, it would be necessary to gam the confidence of the public and their support. It was finally decided to alter the hall. Mr H. Vi Bond had made a plan of the required improvements. Mr Drew, chairman of the Hall Committee, said that the hall had been built 50 years ago; and in the 30 years he had been in Sanson ho had attended many functions in it; a great many of these had had to be held in the street owing to lack of accommodation. Mr Drew said that there were three points facing the public: Lack of accommodation in the ballroom, the dressingroom, the supper-room and kitchen. Three queens had been chosen, one each for the eastern, western and central districts. Flags donated by Mrs A. Adams would be raised from the country offices twice a week to keep the public familiar with the position. Mr Drew then presented Miss Ruth Henson, “Daphne,” (colour pink) of the eastern district, who was wearing black net and lace. Miss Henson was escorted by Mr C. Eglinton. Miss Jean Butler, “Rose” (colour blue), queen of the central district, wearing pink floral taffeta. Miss Butler was escorted by Mr F. Collier. Miss Francis Anderson, “Violet,” queen of the western district, who was wearing her queen’s colour, gold brocadde satin. Miss Anderson was escorted by Air M. Pearce. The queens received a splendid ovation. Misses F. and AI. Anderson played a pianoforte duet, followed by a waltz. Mr A. Sundborn, of Palmerston North, entertained with items on his guitar, while Mr Adams, also of Palmerston North, made lightning sketches.
