THIRTY YEARS AGO.
EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 21, 1908. As the result of a fatal accident which had occurred in the town, the Palmerston North Borough Couucil had decided to enforce the by-law which prohibited the leaving of horsedrawn vehicles unattended in the streets. The Borough Council had decided to metal Te Awo Awe Street and to paint the bridge on the street. The retail price of butter had fallen to Is 2d per lb. The North Island Main Trunk railway line had been opened to Makatote, thus reducing the distance between the railheads to 10 miles. There had been four teams in the Manawatu senior Rugby competition— Kia Toa, Palmerston, Feilding and Old Boys. x Foxton residents had been thrilled at the prospect of a street lighting scheme. Much of the material for the new gas plant had arrived in the town.
