TELEVISION TESTS

INVENTOR’S INTENTION. PLANT FOR AUSTRALIA. LONDON, March 7. A small television station costing £IO,OOO will be, established in Sydney by Mr J. L. Baird, television inventor. Mr Baird made this announcement before leaving England for Australia by the Strathaird recently. It was stated by officials of the company with which Mr Baird is associated, that while he was in Australia the inventor would discuss with wifeless chiefs and financial interests the possibilities of establishing a television station in Sydney costing at least £250,000. . The inventor hopes to perfect television, particularly for cinema screens, while he is in Australia. He took with him on the Strathaird two tons and a-half of equipment, worth £20,000. The smallest transmitter weighs 20 tons and a normal transmitter 80 tons. Mr Baird has a television receiver on tlie Strathaird, and hopes to receive pictures from Alexandra Palace during tho voyage. The normal range of television is 80 to 40 miles, but sound signals have been received from Colombo. Tho inventor hopes to receive pictures, and he thinks it quite possible that Australian short-wave amateurs have received signals from Alexandra Palace without knowing what they were. He will investigate this.
