FLUCTUATIONS IN WHEAT.

Tlie history of the importation*; and exportations of wheat silice the beginning of the industry in New Zealand was discussed by Dr F. tv. Hilgendoi'f (director of the Wheat Research Institute) in his presidential address to the Canterbury branch of the lloyal Society of New Zealand. In 1859 wheat was exported from the Dominion, but during the gold rush in the ’sixties importations had to be made because of the sudden increase in population. From 1876 to 1880, however, the export of wheat amounted to about 3,000,000 bushels a year. As a result of the increase in population after that time the export trade dropped, and after 1911 importations had been made.’ Dr Hilgendorf showed that during the last 10 years more wheat had been produced than at any other period in the history of the Dominion. Ashburton grew about one-quar-ter of the wheat, and about 95 per cent was grown in the South Island.
