“AND NE’ER THE TWAIN SHALL MEET.” —The Shameen is the British concession of Canton and it occupies an island to the southwest of the Chinese City, with which it is connected by a bridge across the intervening creek. This photograph taken from the bridge shows the contrast between the banks. On the right-hand side is a line of magnificent trees bespeaking a spacious boulevard laid out with every regard to an opulent European standard. On the opposite shore is a conglomeration of fantastic Chinese houses sheltering thousands of Cantonese in a monotonous condition of squalor.
