MAORI CHIEFTAINESS

DEATH AT PAREWANUI. The last of a celebrated and historic Maori line, Mrs Aputa Iviwliirau Iliakara, cliieftainess of the Ngatiapa tribe, passed away at Parewanui lust night at the ge of 66 years. Widely known throughout the tribes of the North Island, she was greatly revered and held in high affection both by virtue of the dignity of her position and of her own personality. Sue was of a romantic line of chieftains which have in no small way contributed to the native history of the Dominion. Her father, Chief Ihakara, will be remembered particularly as a benefactor, lie having donated a block of approximately seven acres of land as the sites for the Fox ton High School and the Foxton Public School about 30 years ago. The late cliieftainess had just attended the reception at Montoa to King Koroki, and her passing was sudden and somewhat unexpected. A. tangi has commenced at Parewanui, which is being attended by several hundred natives* from . the surrounding and other districts. Hie tangi will probably last for a week.
