At Hastings yesterday, Laughing Song, Ccntrcpoisc, and Rod Witch finished in lino over half a mil© on tlio grass, and the 50sec. was tho fastest recorded in t.he morning for'the distance.

Mercenary For Stud. Mercenary, owned by Air H. I). Greenwood, has been retired to tho stud. She •.vas a winner at Oamaru at the Now Year, but 1 disappointed in her later efforts. By Paper Aloney from Egotism, Mercenary is three-years-old. Rider Suspended.

A. Russell, rider of Golden Dart, who won the concluding event on the first day of the Westland Racing Club’s meeeting, was suspended for the remainder of tho programme for interfering with Owls Glea.ni, who finished second, in tho straight Will Be Bracketed.

Hillsido and Charles Hugo, both owned by Mr G. Priest, but trained in different stables, were tried out over half a mile at Hastings yesterday, but the more experienced Charles Hugo had the better of tho gallop in 51jsec. They will bo bracketed in Thursday’6 Maiden Scurry at Napier Park.

Riding Engagements. At Napier Park of Thursday S. Wilson will ride Granvale, Hamarin and Kaliikatoa. Wilson will go on to Bulls to ride Arctic King, Princess Isabel, Gay Alolly and Jubilee Song on Saturday. Trebor and Quexona will bo ridden at Bulls by A- E. Bonnet, and Protection by W. Doyle. Another Woman Trainer.

At the monthly meeting of the Canterbury' district committee a trainer’s license ■was recommended to bo granted to Miss Ron& Bryce, daughter of tho well-known trotting trainer, J. Bryce. If the recommendation bo approved by tho Racing Conference, Miss Bryoe will bo the third woman in Now Zealand lo hold a trainer’s license, the present holders being Mrs J. Campbell, Riccarton, and Mrs A. Alc-Pon-ald, Awapuni.

Studley Royal Goes Well. At Ricearton yesterday, Stud ley Royal and Nightdress kept together over the first half-mile, in 59 3-ssec, of a seven-furlong

task, but the latter was- of no uso in tho run homo and Studley Royal finished several lengths in front in 1.31. Studley Royal is generally considered to be very well treated in the Fcnninsula Cup in faco of his Dunedin success, and is likely to bo a good favourite. L. J. Ellis will ride him at a few pounds overweight. Nightdress appears to be right out of form. Trentham Horses At Bulls. Two of T. R. George's team, Alloa and Trcbor, both winners at Wanganui, went on to Bulls without returning to Trcnthctn, and thcro they will await Saturday's racing. Two other members of George's team, Alunga and Free Gold, did not accept for the Rangitikei meeting. Alunga knocked himself about in his box a day or two ago, and Free Gold's next appoarancc may be in the. scurry at Carterton. Free Gold galloped fairly well over fivo furlongs ■at Trentham yesterday.
