APPEAL TO MAORIS
KEEPING UP TRADITIONS. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, March 1. “The time lias come when five Maoris should stand together to protect our age-old customs. Maoris have a great deal to lose l>y assimilation by the pakeha to-da.y. The younger generation lacks respect for Maori traditions and has absorbed pakeha ways. If we Maoris are proud of our race, the time has come for a national revival among us.” This a.ppeal to the Maori people is
included in the reply of the secretary of the Ngati-Kohingunu memorial committee, Mr S. Carroll, to a statement by the Bishopi of Aotoa-roa (lit. Rev. I?'. A. Bennett) criticising a story current in Hawke’s Bay that the new Sir James Carroll Memorial House near Wairoa has been declared tapu because of an infringement of ancient building customs.
