DISASTER FOR CHINA
JAPANESE PENETRATION. RETREAT CUT OFF. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received March 1, 2.5 p.m. SHANGHAI. Feb. 28. The Japanese irruption into Shansi Province is a major Chinese disaster, a Japanese column from Luanfu cutting off the Chinese line of retreat swerving the fugitives westward helterskelter over the mountains towards the Yellow River. The main Chinese line of defence consisting of 100,000 troops extending for 20 miles was swept aside. The Chinese officials admit that the situation is critical and that any recovery in Shansi is unlikely.
