(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Feb. 25. According fo those working in the woolpack factory Buffering from goitre, which by the way is fairly prevalent throughout tho district, there is something in flax fibre which has a remedial effect' in connection with this malady. Three houses are to be erected at Afanawatu Heads and’ several Palmerston North residents have signified their intention of commencing building operations at an early date. During late weeks considerable interest has been centred locally on finding the Bowling Club champions in view of the centre champion of champions contests, at Palmerston North. For the junior singles contest, Geo. Walls was the player finally qualifying, with M. Iluff runner-up. As Walls will be unable to travel, Huff will go forward as the Foxton representative. The senior singles contest was won by R. Rangiheuea, with W., Howe runnerup. Rangiheuea having an appointment elsewhere on the date chosen, Howe will represent tho club in tho senior singles championship. The senior pairs competition resulted in Rangiheuea and Thomson coming to the fore again, with F. Robinson and Walls runners-up.

The adjourned meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held last evening when it was anticipated that representatives of the millers and representatives of the Flax workers’ Union, who visited Wellington recently, would be in attendance to discuss the unemployment problem presented by the closing of the local flaxmills. The position was reviewed at some length and it was decided to forward tho following telegram to the Minister of EmIployment:—“At a special meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce deep con corn was expressed at the cessation of I work in the flaxmills and the certainty

of further unemployment. Will you please advise if there is any possibility of the mills reopening at an early date, or the prospect of alternative employment for the men. The position is acute.” The record of the secondary department of the local District High School for distance swimming was broken by the following pupils at the local baths yesterday : R. Shorthouse, who swam 3 miles; J. AlcLaughlan {SOOO yards) and J. Shorthouse (4030 yards). Those successful in swimming a mile were: Jean McKenzie, Peggy Coley, C. Evans, G. Podmore, P. Brady, IT. Riddell. Half a mile: Valda Edwards, Eila Hunt, Joyce Clark, Audrey Robinson, Gwynncth Western, Margaret Robinson, W. Eggers, W. Fletcher. Certificates were also gained by the following: Nina Pikhaloff (625yds), G. Harriot (450yds), R. McKenzie, W. Bullard (250yds), M. Brady, D. Swan (225yds), S. Bradcock, D. Clark (100yds), W. Hart, Jean Read (50yds). Representatives of the local Women’s Institute visited Linton on, Wednesday last to attend the Manawhenua Group rally. Morning tea was served by the members of the Linton Institute. It was decided that the next rally should be held at Koputaroa in July. The banner which was awarded for the best presentation box of flowers was won by a member of the Shannon Institute. An interesting talk on “Native Birds and Trees” was given by Mr J. 11. Stevens, and Mrs. Barnicoat, of Kimbolton, held the interest of members with her talk on a recent visit «to England.

Miss I. Hart, of Park Street, has returned homo after spending n holiday in the South Tsland. Mr snd Mrs B. Younghusband,' of Napier, have returned home after spending a holiday in Foxton as the guests of Mr and Mrs E. TitCombe. Miss Margaret Mounsey, of Wellington, is spending a few days with her parents, Mr and Mrs Mounsey, of Norbiton Road, before returning to Wellington, where she will enter the Salvation Army Training College.
