Andre Pouquet, the new French Consul at Auckland, who arrived in the AVanganella, accompanied by his wife. He succeeds Mr Edmond C. Meyer, who returns to France on leave. M. Pouquet is aged 42. He has served in the French Legation at Tangier, al,so ift Smyrna, Turkey, and, for 13 years lias been attached to the Foreign Affairs Department at Paris. He has been decorated as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. Questioned about Mr Eden’s resignation, he said any such move could not affect the friendly relations between France and Britain. “I like Mr Eden very much because of his true view of the European situation, but maybe the efforts of Mr Chamberlain to ensure peace will succeed.
