UNUSUAL CHARGE.
PURCHASING OF TICKETS. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 24. “What offence is this? If I ask someone to buy a ticket for me is that an offence? It is certainly a new one on me.” These remarks were passed by Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in Court this morning when Albert Wallace Robinson was charged with aiding and abetting Horace Robinson as an agent in the purchasing of two totalisator tickets. Mr Simes represented Robinson, who did not appear, a plea of guilty being entered. Mr Simes assured the Magistrate that this action constituted an offence. Senior-Sergeant Felton explained that defendant had got his 17-year-old son to purchase the tickets. He had explained that life was unaware that he was committing an offence. “This is a matter that is not generally known by the public,” said Mr Simes. “The fact that a person in asking another to buy a ticket commits an offence as well as the purchaser is not generally appreciated. This sort of tiling goes on hundreds of times every day of every race meeting. “I think we Anight treat this case as a warning and order him to pay costs,” declared the Magistrate.
