PARTY SPLIT
RIVAL LABOUR FACTIONS. TO CONTEST ELECTIONS. N.S.W. REPRESENTATIONS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received February 24, 12.30 p.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 24. A meeting of industrial workers opposed to the present Leader of the Labour Party (Mr J. T. Lang) elected as their leader Mr R. Heffron, M.L.A. He will lead a number of union candidates against the official Australian Labour Party candidates at the State elections. The decision indicates that, for the first time in the history of the State Labour movement, rival State Labour Leaders and rival candidates, each aiming to represent the workers, will contest the State elections.
The meeting also endorsed the nomination of Mr J. Hooker as Labour candidate against Mr Lang in the Auburn electorate, and to concentrate all their forces upon bringing abdur the defeat of Mr Lang. Mr Heffron was born at Thames, New Zealand, and was actively associated with the New Zealand Labour movement about 20 years ago.
