RANGITIKEI.
MARTON, Feb. 22. Mr T. T. Bartlett and family, of Tipper Tutaenui, are leaving shortly to take up their residence in Palmerston North and they have been accorded many farewells recently. Mr and Mrs H. Galpin entertained members of the congregation of the Tutaenui Presbyterian Church at their home in Upper Tutaenui. Rev. T. H. Burton and Mr J. Maclure spoke of the high regard in which Mr Bartlett was held as a settler and as. a member and an elder. On Friday some of the office-bearers and friends gathered at the Maori Girls’ College to farewell Mr Bartlett and Misses Bartlett on behalf of St. Andrew’s Church and the college. In the evening Mr and Mrs G. B. Gregory entertained the members of the session and their wives at tea in their home in honour of Mr Bartlett. Mr Burton spoke particularly of Mr , Bartlett’s service as a member of the session for the last twelve years and also as presbytery elder. Mr George Barbanch, a victim of the East Coast disaster, was a brother of Mrs T. Radicli, of Marton. Another brother, Mr S. Barbanch, lives in Marton. Roused from sleep by the roar Qf fierce flames, Mr F. A. FullertonSmith, of Upper Tutaenui, discovered his bathroom hot water cupboard ablaze at 3.15 o’clock this morning, and called his family. Snatching a few clothes, the members of the household got clear of the building as soon as they could, for the flames swept through the old timber rafters of the house and quickly made the place untenable. Nothing was saved and the large building of 17 rooms was completely destroyed.
