PORT NICHOLSON WINS
FIRST TEST SELECTION. DOMINION a grade bands. The first A grade test selection at the. New Zealand championship band contest now being hold in Palmerston North was decided last evening at the-Showgrounds in the presence of an attendance of disappointing ' size considering the importance, of the event. Seven bands competed, and the winners were the Port Nicholson Silver Band (Wellington), with Wanganui Garrison second and Timaru Municipal third. As was the case with the first B grade test on the previous evening, the jioints were not announced, these being kept entirely secret until after the second test.,
In commenting on the result, the judge (Mr E. P. Kerry) stated that the playing throughout was of a representative A grade character. The winners had given a really first-class performance. He had “sat back and enjoyed it.” Theirs was a fine rendition, with the tone always excellent, and he could not help saying that they were a fair distance ahead. The arrangements were again complete, there being no delays after the commencement. When one band completed its performance the next marched to the dais. Intending patrons are requested to note that owing to the exceptional weather conditions the street maich of the competing bands to tie S jp grounds, which was scheduled foi 12.8 U p.m. on Saturday next, has been cancelled and all competing bands will now assemble at the Showgrounds at 1 nm. and the military quickstep will commence at 1.30 P-m-.-f+his The local committee regret that this alteration is necessary, but the excessive heat this week leavs no otliei course open.
