MISCELLANEOUS CASES. Mr J, L. Stout, S.M.j presided at the sitting of the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Margaret Scott Hart, aged 33, a married woman, charged that, on February 15, she stole, at Paliiatua, a paid of lady’s silk stockings, valued at 7s 6d, and that on the same date she stole 14 books valued at £2 from G. H. Bennett and Co., was remanded for a week, bail being allowed. Edward Ryan, aged 36, a labourer, was charged that lie received from Margaret Scott Hart one pair of shoes, valued at 17s 6d, also a pair of pyjamas, knowing them to have been dishonestly obtained. A remand for a week was granted on bail. Lee Hing, aged 40, a laundryman, charged, with a second offence of drunkenness, was lined 10s, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. Robert George Gibson, aged 21, a labourer, charged with a serious offence, was remanded to appear on February 28, on the application of Mr G, I. McGregor. Bail was allowed. Ray Burnett, of 'Palmerston North, was charged that, being the driver of a car, he did, on December 16, 1937, drive without due.care and attention; also, that on October 30, 1937, lie drove a motor vehicle in Grey Street without a warrant of fitness. —A plea of not guilty was entered in writing, and a fine of £3 was imposed on the first charge and £1 on the latter charge, with costs in each case. Chan Tat Clioy, of Rongotea, for whom Mr F. G. Opie appeared, was charged that, not being a person licensed to sell liquor, lie did on December 24, sell beer. Defendant pleaded guilty and was fined £ls with' costs after Mr Opie had pleaded for leniency, stating that Choy had sold the licpior to accommodate customers. Alan Croon (Mr A. M. Ongley) was fined £2, with 10s costs, on a charge under tile Police Offences Act. Thomas Bernard Ellis, stated to be in arrears with maintenance due his wife to the amount of £l4 11s 6d, was sentenced to two inontlis’ gaol, the warrant to be suspended so long as he pays current maintenance of £1 .5s a week plus 10s a week off the arrears. He was also sentenced to one month’s gaol for being £7 15s in arrears with maintenance due his three children, the warrant to be suspended so long as lie pays current maintenance of 15s a weels plus 5s a week off the arrears. Eric Charles Knight was sentenced to one month’s gaol for being in arrears with maintenance due liis child to the amount of £5 10s. The warrant will be suspended as long as he keeps current maintenance of 10s a week paid plus 10s a week off the arrears. Alfred George Canvood was fined £2 with £4 5s 3d for driving without due care and attention. The charge was the result of a collision on the Whirokino bridge. MOTORING OFFENCES.

Lawrence Alexander Clode, charged with crossing the railway line at the intersection of Main and Princess Streets on January 2, when the line was not clear, was fined £2 with 10s costs. Robert Frederick Cooke, of Ashhurst, charged that he failed to give way to traffic approaching from the right at the intersection of Main and Rualiine Streets, was fined £2 with 10s costs. Stanley Walters, who was charged that, on December 15, lie drove a van without a license and without a warrant of fitness, was fined 10s on the first charge and £1 on the second, with costs. Basil Frederick Effingham, of Ormondville, charged with driving a ear on January 1 in a manner which under the circumstances might have been dangerous, on the WanganuiPalnierston North Main Highway, was fined £3. Samuel Andrews, who was charged that, on January 3, on the SansonPalnierston North Main Highway, lie drove at a speed which might under the circumstances have bene dangerous, and with driving without a warrant of fitness, was fined £3 on the first charge and £1 on the second charge, with costs. Victor Vincent Sullivan, of Ohape, charged that, on December 16, he drove a motor-cycle on the Palmerston North-Wanganui main highway without due care and attention, also with driving the vehicle without a warrant of fitness, was fined £2 oil the first charge and 10s on the second charge with costs. „ . William Henry Tooley, of Christchurch, charged that, on December 7, he failed to yield the right of way to pedestrian traffic at the intersection of Rangitikei Street and the Square, pleaded guilty. A fine of iUs, with 10s costs, was imposed. George Henry Blanche, charged that, on January 31, lie attempted to cross the Mangawhata Road crossing when a train was within half a mile, pleaded guilty through Mr L. G. H. Sinclair, who submitted that defendant had not heard the train, which was apparently travelling quietly and could not be heard above the noise of the vehicle. A fine of £2, with costs, was imposed.
