WORK AT CAULFIELD. AJAX IN G<?OD FORM. MELBOURNE. Feb. 22. At Caulfield this morning, Elanagc rah six furlongs on the sand in 1.17*, and Gold Rod and Egmont five furlongs in 1.3*. On the steeple grass Ajax, who is very fit, strode over a mile, the last half-mile in 51sec. Erua and Turf Box covered a mile in 1.46. Prince Quex beat Masterton over a mile in 1.462Pamelus was going well at the end of five furlongs in 1.2*. Red Ray did the best nine furlongs, running the distance in 2inin. At Flemington on the course proper, with the hurdles 30ft. out. Marauder ran a mile and a-half in 2.46£ and went well. He was accompanied over the last one and a-quarter by Elmdale in 2.17. Young Crusader went a mile and aquarter in 2.15 a, the last six furlongs in 1.19, and he also travelled well. Tuckerbox was too good for Apollo over a njile in 1.484- Bringa was going well over a mile and a-quarter in 2.13. Etoic did six furlongs in I.lß*. Old Rowley and Hautboy ran a mile in 1.52, the last half in 514. Lolorua did half a mile in 524 see. MENTONE MEETING. NEW ZEALAND ACCEPTORS. MELBOURNE, Feb. 21. _ Scratchings for the Newmarket Handicap include Gold Rod, Namakia and Othello, and for the Australian Cup, Elanage. New Zealand acceptors for Mentone on Wednesday include: Newmarket Trial Stakes, Royal Order; Berkshire Mile, Namakia and Palatinate. R. Wilson will ride Mohican in the Newmarket Stakes.
