BAND CONTEST

FIRST B GRADE TEST, WELLINGTON INSTITUTE WINS, VERY CLOSE PLAYING, The first test selection for the B grade bands was the attraction at the Showgrounds last night. The atmosphere was cool after a humid day and a large crowd attended to hear individual renderings of the operatic selection “Nadeshda” by ten combinations. Each Land marched smartly to the dais and at the tcoiK'Jias’ion of the presentation earned a round of applause from the spectators. The points awarded were not announced pending the second test on Thursday night (the selection “Stabat Mater”), after which the points will be computed and the final placings determined. The judge (Mr E. P. Kerry), before giving his placings last night, commented that there had been very close playing in the rendering of the selection. The margin between the first four bands had been very slender, and he considered that it would be quite easy for the positions to be reversed on Thursday. The detailed results are: B GRADE—FIRST TEST SELECTION “Nadeshda” (A. Goring-Thomas). INSTITUTE SILVER BAND, Wellington (conductor, Mr A. Ironmonger) 1 DANNEVIRKE MUNICIPAL BAND (Mr W. H. Tougher) ... 2 CHRISTCHURCH MUNICIPAL BAND (Mr R. Sampson) ... 3 ASHBURTON SILVER BAND (Lieutenant W. H. Osborne) ... 4 Also competed.—Wellington Artillery (Mr W. H.
