FINAL TRIBUTES.

LATE MR F T. LOVEJOY. The large attendance and the wealth of floral tributes at the -funeral yesterday of the late. Frederick Thomas Lovejoy, whose tragic death occurred as the result of drowning at Foxtnn Beach on Sunday, testified to the high esteem in which the deceased gentleman was held. The late Mr Lovejoy was born in Weber, Hawke’s Bay, 41 years ago, and die lived in that district until he was 21 years of age, when he immediately enlisted for active service. On his return to the Dominion ho settled in Palmerston North. For 14 years he was on the staff of the municipal gas works, after which he set up in business on his own account as a wood and coal merchant. A keen member of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, the deceased gentleman played for the R.S.A. Association Football Club until it went out of existence. He was an active member of the City Cricket Club and an enthusiastic Oddfellow. The sympathy of a -wide circle of friends towards the sorrowing wife and two children was manifest at the service yesterday. Rev. F. S. Ramson officiated and Messrs R. J., A. R., and W. Lovejoy (brothers), A. W. Chapman (representing the- R.S.A.), S. W.. Baigent (brother-in-law), and G. W. Trask (representing former fellow gasworks employees), were the pall-bearers. The large number of Wreaths included tributes from the following : —Returned Soldiers’ Association, Manawatu Cricket Association, City Cricket Club, United Cricket Club, gasworks employees, Wood and Coal Merchants’ Association, and Messrs Justice and Edmunds, Ltd., and staff. MR W. S. PATTEN. An association with Palmerston North which had extended over 35 years was broken with the passing on December 16 of Mr William Sefton Patten, at the age of 76 years. The late Mr Patten was born in Christchurch, his father, Mr James Patten, having been a passenger in the Cressy, one of the First Four Ships. Mr Patten removed to Wellington as a young man and married there 51 years ago. Later he came to Palmerston North and in his lengthy residence here, though he did not take part in public life, was a member of the Foresters’, Orange, and Masonic Lodges. Mrs Patten passed away only four months ago. Mrs J. Gore, of Milson Line, is a daughter, and Mr W. S. Patten, of Auckland, and formerly “Uncle Dan” of 2ZO, is a son. There are seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral was held last Saturday at the Bunnythorpe Cemetery, when a large number of persons paid their last respects. The pall-bearers at the residence were grandsons and at the graveside members of the Masonic fraternity. Rev. F H. McDowall conducted the service.
