BREAKING TRADITION.

WOMAN ATTENDS FEAST. Tradition -was broken at the 309th Cutlers’ Feast at Sheffield recently when, for the first time in the long history of the Feast, a woman was among the guests. Women have always been taboo, but the Lord Mayor of Sheffield this year is—a WomanCouncillor Mrs A. E. Longden. A Cutlers’ Feast without the chief citizen would be unthinkable. Thus Mrs Longden, a widow, head of a firm of building works contractors, took her place at the head table, surrounded by a distinguished company, including a member of the Government, important personages in the Navy, Army, and R.A.F., industrialists, representatives of the ancient trade companies in London and leaders of commerce. Mrs Longden is Sheffield’s first woman Lord Mayor.
