Many messages of congratulation were received at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, the occasion of the King’s birthday, states a British Official Wireless message. Queen Mary drove to the Palace to convey her good wishes.

Deputy-Superintendent J. W. Hepburn, of the Palmerston North Fire Brigade, is spending his annual leave in the South Island. He is accompanied by Mrs Hepburn. At the graduation ceremony of the Bible Training Institute, Auckland, Messrs J. R. C. Browning and R. H. Greenfield, of Palmerston North, were awarded the diploma of the institute with honours. A minister in his time both of the jVlethodist and Presbyterian Churches, Rev. James Richards celebrated his 91st birthday at his home, Avonside, Christchurch, on Saturday. He came to New' Zealand from Australia many years ago to repair his health.

Rev. J. Chisholm, of Knox Church, Invercargill, a son of the late Rev. James Chisholm, at one time minister of St. Andrews’s, Palmerston North, was an overnight visitor to Palmerston North. He was the guest of his brother, Mr J. S. Chisholm and Mrs Chisholm, of 4 Princess Street.

After eleven years’ service in Hastings parish Canon C. Mortimer Jones will take up his duties in the parish of Waipukurau toward the end of February. For some time Canon Mortimer Jones has been anxious to secure a country parish, and before leaving for England last autumn he asked the bishop’ if he could have one. Soon after his- return the offer of the parish of Waipukurau was made by the board of nominators of the diocese of Waiapu, and acceptance of this offer by Canon Mortimer Jones was announced yesterday. Mr E. A. Searle, who for nearly three years has been headmaster of the Longburn School, commences the first term next year as first assistant at the North East Valley School, Dunedin, and his place will be taken at Longburn by Mr J. C. Hall, now of Oroua Downs. Mr Searle was presented with a reading lamp and an ash tray from the lady teachers and pupils at the breaking-up ceremony yesterday, and a pipe from the school committee. Reference was made to Mr Searle’s popularity with the children and the pa-rents, and he was extended the best of good wishes for success in his new post. ■ <
