ASHHURST
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHHURST, Dec. 14.
At the monthly meeting of the School Committee Mr M. P. Wilkin presided. The headmaster (Mr-R. N. Finlay) reported 116 children on the roll. The children attending woodwork and cookery classes in Palmorston North had shown wonderful progress, in their first year, and the results were very gratifying. Entries were exhibited at Ashhurst and Whakarongo Flower Shows, many prizes being annexed. The committee forwarded a letter of' thanks to the Oroua County Council for their offer to paint white lines across the street in front of the school. The chairman extended to members and the staff the compliments of the season.
On Saturday afternoon the Tennis Club A team journeyed to Aokautere to play a friendly match. The results were in favour of Aokautere, the scores being 9 sets to 7. The team consisted of Misses- K. Brewer, G. and E. Eaton, Mrs B. Williamson, and J. Borrett, N. and W. Brewer, B. Williamson. The children’s anniversary of' the Ashhurst Methodist Sunday school was held on Sunday, when the children took part
in both services. Special singing waa given and Psalms were read by pupils. The concert and prize giving was held on Monday. Members of the Bible class and teachers of the Sunday school prepared a special tea for the cnildren in the vestry. The programme for the concert was: —Song, pupils; pianoforte solo, Miss K. Brewer; song, school; recitation, Nola Tremewan; duet, Keith Groves and James Templeton: recitation, Joan Barclay; song, Shirley Duthie; recitation, Joan Mclntyre; song, Miss I. Woodroofe; duet, Jean and Janet Currie; recitation, Marjorie Grove; song, Mrs D. Maul; recitation, Miss M. Dunstall ; recitation, Robert Currie. The prizes were presented to the following- Primary class, Joan Mclntyre 1, Evelyn Tunnicliffe 2, Cecil Tunmchffe 3, Jean Currie, Janet Currie, Nola Tremewan, Bruce Duthie, »lon Duthie; Boys class, David Young 1, Robert Currie 2, John Sumner 3, Jim Templeton, Keith Groves, Ronald Tremewan, Robert Searle; senior girls, Joan Hyndman 1, Bettv Young 2, Marjorie Groves 3, Joan Barclay, Shirley Duthie, Nola Wood, Eileen Drummond. Mr Bennett’s prize for the Young Worshippers’ Deague w;aJ won by Robert Currie. Two special prizes donated by Rev. C. A. Foston were awarded to Jean and Janet Currie tor church attendance.
