TECHNICAL SCHOOL

BREAKING-UP CEREMONY. PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. Marking the end of a year of much progress from every point of view, the annual breaking-up ceremony of the Palmerston North Technical School was held in the school assembly hall before a large attendance last evening. The principal address was delivered by Dr A. G. Butchers, head of the Government correspondence schools. Mr M. H. Oram, chairman of tne High Schools Board of Governors and Technical School Committee, presided, others on the platform being Mrs Oram, Mr J. A. Nash (a member or tne board) and Mrs Nash, Mr A. J. Graham (a member of the Board), Mr and Mrs T. R. Hodder, Colonel J. H. "Whyte Sa member of the Wanganui Education Joarcl), and members of the teaching staff. Apologies for absence were tendered on behalf of the Mayor (Mr A. E. Monsford), Mr J. Hodgens, M.P., Messrs 0. Monrad, G. Tremaine, A. A. Langley (of the Board of Governors) and Miss E. E. Stephens (principal of the Girls’ Hign' School). In welcoming the visitors and Dr Butchers on behalf of the governing body, Mr Oram expressed its gratification at the presence of Mr and Mrs Hodder, the former of whom, he said, had spent many years in giving service and guidance to all the secondary schools at this centre. He commented that, continuing its unremitting record of progress, the school had, during the year, consolidated its position and fully maintained its scholastic standard. It had upheld -its place on the field of sport and in the estimation of the educational authorities and the public generally, and very sympathetic consideration had been given to all reasonable requests by the Education Department and the Minister (Hon. P. Fraser). Splendid work had been done by the school director (Mr G. G. Hancox) and his staff. Concluding, Mr Oram congratulated the pupils on their work and the manner in which they .had upheld the school’s traditions.

Immediately putting his hearers in a receptive mood by a recital of humorous school “howlers,” Dr A. G. Butchers gave an inspiring address on social problems (reported elsewhere in this issue) and urged "the pupils to apply themselves to a study of the wider affairs of the world with a real earnestness of purpose. He concluded by complimenting them on then’ singing and wished them a very happy holiday, after which he presented the prizes as follows:
