CALF CLUBS

RESULTS OF JUDGING. Yesterday’s proceedings in the Calf Club judging were concerned with No. 2 group in the widespread competition, the judges being Mr J. Smith, of Bunnytliorpe. who judged for dairy type, and Mr H. 11. Green, of Kairanga, who was concerned with the care and attention aspect of the competition. The first school visited was Taikorea, where proceedings commenced at 9.30. Notwithstanding the early hour, there was a good attendance of parents, who maintained a keen interest in the proceedings throughout. Four calves and five lambs were presented for judging. An hour later the judges, visited the Oroua Downs School and here again there was an excellent attendance of parents. Eight calves were presented for judging at this school and it was unfortunate that one exhibit, an outstanding calf, had to be barred. The ladies of the district provided morning tea. Shortly after midday the judges and official party attended at the Rongotea School where nine calves, eight senior animals and six lambs were presented. Unfortunately, rain commenced to fall and made judging conditions somewhat difficult. However, despite this setback, parents and others maintained a keen interest in the proceedings. At this gathering one calf from the Glen Oroua School was also presented. Kopane School outdid itself by presenting 23 calves, 11 yearlings, five two-year heifers, and five mature cows, the number constituting a record for the Manawatu district. The animals were presented in excellent order and the children earned the very high praise of both judges. One ot the most pleasing features of the display was the presentation of 21 senior animals. This indicated that _ the children earned are deriving considerable benefit and education from these competitions in being interested enough to carry the animals on year to year and bring them forward for successive judging. There was a very large attendance of parents and other interested parties and the afternoon was brought to a fitting close by the provision of afternoon tea' by the ladies oi the Kopane district. , The official party, in addition to the judges already mentioned, comprised Messrs W. J.'Clroucher, supervisor of the group, T. Murlford. member of the Wanganui Education Board, and E. H. Lange. agricultural instructor, Wanganui Education Board.
