ENTERTAINMENTS

STATE THfcATRE. “FLIGHT FROM GLORY.” A gripping drama of an aerial legion of lost men, “Flight from Glory,” RICO Radio picture with Chester Morris and Whitney Bourne in the leading roles, screens finally to-night at the State as exciting, suspense-laden entertainment. Unusually outstanding aro tho powerful characterisations offered by the east principals and the novel story. Concerning the harrowing experiences, of a "roup of renegade aviators engaged in flying 'condemned planes over the lofty peaks of .the treacherous Andos, the exciting story attains unusual dramatic heights in its vivid depiction of tho reaction of theso exiled men to a young girl whom circumstances bring to tho remote South American settlement. The striking series of portrayals are offered by Chester Morris. Miss Bourne, Onslow Stevens, Van Heflin, Douglas Walton, Rita La Roy and other capable players, Morris is cast as a hard-boiled chief pilot who falls in love with Miss Bourne when she and her flier husband come to the air base. Onslow Stevens is seen as tho hcartloss owner of tho air service employing the outcast pilots whoso licenses have been revoked in the States. To Van Heflin falls the difficult rolo of Miss Bourne’s weakling husband who breaks under the strain of his dangerous occupation, while Douglas Walton, Richard Lane, Walter Miller and Paul Guilfoylo essay tho roles of tho remaining members of tho luckless cast. Included in a specially fine selection of supports is the latest of the world in colour series, “Under tho Southern Cross”; also a screamingly funny comedy, sports thrill, and tho latest edition of the Patho Nows. MAYFAIR THEATRE. “A SOUTHERN MAID.” “A Southern Maid,” radiantly beautiful daughter of Sunny Spain, will captivate your heart and set your pulses beating to a gay rhythm of melody and romance. Fiesta scenes, vivid and picturesque; gay romantic sequences afloat, and a story of a runaway love match form a spectacular background for the lovely Bebe Daniels, who plays tho title role in “A Southern Maid,” British International Pictures’ elaborate picturisation of tho world-fam-ous musical comedy romance, at the Mayfair to-night. While the world at largo has dropped to old conventions concerning love and marriage, in the South American State of San Giorgio, fathers still arrange their daughters’ marriages, and young Jack Rawdon, who has followed the beautiful Dolores all tho way to her homeland, finds it hard to believe that she was unaware of her parents’ intentions towards a certain Francesco, superb -but impoverished grandee. The course of true lovo does not run smooth, but it eventually “finds a way,” and a ghost looms up from the past to help the young lovers to happiness. Supporting Bebe Daniels, who is- of course, the glorious Dolores, is Britain’s stage favourite, Clifford Mollison as Jack, a role which eminently suits his inimitable cheery self; Harry Welchman, who plays Francesco, who is deprived of the woman he loves by both father and son, and Morris Harvey, as the martinet of a father. “IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT.” Theatregoers have been waiting with keen delight for the revival of “it Happened One Night,” which screens at the Mayfair to-night. Recognised as one of the finest comedies in years, it stars Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable.
