MEMBER’S MAIDEN SPEECH.' TRIBUTE TO MASSEY COLLEGE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Nov. 24. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. The Dunedin District Drainage and Sewerage Amendment Bill, the Timaru Harbour Board Loan Amendment Bill, the Christchurch Tramway Board Empowering Bill, and the Whangarei Airport Bill were each read the second time. When the second reading of the Sale of Wool Bill was taken, Hon. J. E. Duncan made his maiden speech and referred to the value of the pastoral industry. There was a necessity for more research work to assist the wool industry, he said. Good work was done at Massey College in certain lines, but there were other problems confronting wool growers that could be tackled. Noxious--- weeds was one of these, and he considered it would -be to the advantage of the nation if the Government made larger grants for entomological research so that parasites inimical to noxious weeds could be secured. The second reading of the Coal Mines Amendment Bill was moved by the Leader of the Council (Hon. M. Fagan), who paid a tribute to tlifc Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb) and then discussed the provisions of the measure. After Hon. E. Dye and Hon. W. H. Mclntyre had spoken on the problems of the mining industry covered by the clauses of the Bill the debate was adjourned and the Council rose.
