The New Zealand Tennis Council last night elected Mr George Gore a life member in recognition of his long and valuable service to lawn tennis in New Zealand.
At the Hawke’s Bay-Manawatu District Methodist Synod, Rev. A. Blakemore wa.s nominated to the forthcoming Conference for appointment as district secretary vice Rev. R. B. Gosnell, who has held the position for the last four years.
Brigadier P. C. S. Hobart, DeputyDirector of Staff Duties at the T\ ar Office, has been appointed Director of Military Training at the War Office, states a British official wireless message. He was recently commander of a tank brigade. At the Hawke’s Bay-Manawatu District Methodist Synod, Rev. R. E. Fordyce was elected district representative to the stationing committee at the Conference to be held in Wellington in February next. Rev. A. Blakemore was elected substitute representative.
A passenger by the Orama, which has arrived at Fremantle from London, is Professor Cecil P. G. Wakeley, one of England’s leading surgeons. He is visiting Australian on behalf of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, and will conduct examinations at Melbourne and Sydney, after which he will visit Dunedin.—Pres* Association. -
Mr H. B. Riggs, who for the past 12 years has been secretary and a director of the Goldberg Advertising Agency, Ltd., has been appointed general manager of the company for New Zealand. Mr Riggs is an old pupil of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, and was well known in athletic circles some years ago. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday morning of Mr Matthew Gaskin, a well-known resident of. Martinborough and Masterton. Mr Gaskin was born at Taita, Hutt, 80 years ago. He is survived by a widow and two sons, Messrs L. Gaskiu, Masterton, and G. H. Gaskin, Pahiatua. Mr J. Gaskin, Eketahuna, is a brother.
Canon E. A. Gowring, who recently arrived in Sydney, en route to New Zealand, besides being a Canon of Bristol Cathedral, is a member of the Wiltshire County Council. Before taking Holy Orders, Canon Gowring was on the inspectors’ staff of the Bank of New Zealand. In the early ’nineties, in association’ with the late Sir Joseph Ward and Mr William Kitchener, a brother of the late Lord Kitchener, he carried out the first regular mail service to Stewart Island from the South Island. Before continuing liis’ voyage to New Zealand, Canon Gowring will spend about three weeks with relatives in New South Wales.
